Many thanks to Jim for the photo.
Couch probably followed from bogglement at the "gh" in the name. Unhappily I just discovered that the occasion of my own one problem with that recently left us, the close friend of a close friend who kept the keys that let me borrow our mutual friend's London premises, a Baughman pronounced Bothman it was the very devil to find in a London telephone directory. And a man liable once arrived aloft, to have been looking for Ory, as Wild Bill Davison used to say, "all those guys up there, Eddie Condon and the rest, why am I still down here?" while musing on the volumes of hooch he had swallowed. Finally I had to telephone my friend in America!
I really went for the Paul Howard recordings, discovered in my teens when I'd only just heard the trombonist in the flesh: not Ory but Lawrence Brown. There was a lovely interview with Ruby Braff on BBC radio, not to be confused with the Jim Godbolt one. Ruby on what an appalling person Duke Ellington was, marching with retinue to the head of the taxi rank and smiling at people who'd been waiting an age, as he boarded the first one that finally arrived. The expressions of horror climaxed when he learned that around 1967 Duke had given Lawrence the Tricky Sam material ("he can't be the nice clean pastor's son he says when he can play like that," said Russell Procope)."Lawrence? He did that to Lawrence?" said Ruby, audibly pale plainly exercising powerful self-restraint given the frequency of f f f (not fortissimo) in the Godbolt wonder. Cab Calloway I think called Lawrence's playing "exquisite", Lawrence was the one Ellington band member he would have liked for his own ensemble.
