Finally I had to telephone my friend in America!</div><div id="yui_3_16_0_1_1527686628403_3229" dir="ltr"><br></div><div class="qtdSeparateBR" id="yui_3_16_0_1_1527686628403_3231" dir="ltr">I really went for the Paul Howard recordings, discovered in my teens when I'd only just heard the trombonist in the flesh: not Ory but Lawrence Brown. There was a lovely interview with Ruby Braff on BBC radio, not to be confused with the Jim Godbolt one. Ruby on what an appalling person Duke Ellington was, marching with retinue to the head of the taxi rank and smiling at people who'd been waiting an age, as he boarded the first one that finally arrived. The expressions of horror climaxed when he learned that around 1967 Duke had given Lawrence the Tricky Sam material ("he can't be the nice clean pastor's son he says when he can play like that," said Russell Procope).</div><div class="qtdSeparateBR" id="yui_3_16_0_1_1527686628403_3231" dir="ltr">"Lawrence? He did that to Lawrence?" said Ruby, audibly pale plainly exercising powerful self-restraint given the frequency of f f f (not fortissimo) in the Godbolt wonder.
