[Dixielandjazz] RV: testing

Hi DJML'rs:I am an official lurker and do miss the people previously mentioned. They did stir the pot in a good way. Steve Barbone used to contribute frequently but not in recent times. He certainly was outspoken. In the early years of the list there were members who had direct ties to the pioneers of OKOM and other fields of jazz or pop music such as Don Ingle. Whenever a question about Bix or someone of that era would come up, Don would provide anecdotes he recalled from his dad Red Ingle or from his own personal observation. Those were invaluable references. I had the pleasure of corresponding with Floyd Levin, jazz historian from the LA area, his first hand knowledge was also invaluable.John R, T. Davies was kind enough to answer some questions I had about Art Tatum.Bill Haesler is the expert on tracking down minute details of recording sessions. How he knew who played 3rd trumpet in Gene Austin's band on Monday Jan 3, 1927 on an alternate take of My Blue Heaven is beside me. No one asked him that question but I'm sure he knows the answer.
So everything changes and time marches on. This list was a great resource in many ways, but eventually it will fade away .Respectfully,Art Wood

Dunno if it is al FBs fault.  We’ve just lost a lot of members, and particularly those that did the “jammin’” (not musically speaking, but with words).  Marek, of course, was a great stimulator for discussion.  I always laughed as he was very so much stuck in his ways.  If it was the style he liked, then it was good.  He was even that way when we discussed wines privately.  And, Bob Ringwald used to keep things going.  And, we had some Aussies that were very knowledgeable.  I’m afraid I’m not great on the history of jazz discussions.  I’ve just played anything that has swing, and never really went into where it came from.

The Canal Street Jazz Band is still honking, albeit having lost a number of jazz sites during the pandemic, and to economics in general.  We’ve got another gig this Sunday at a club that used to feature only jazz, but now has all kinds of live music with the occasional Jazz.  Next month, a wedding, a gig at a Japanese restaurant (a know, weird!), and back to this no jazz joint (they have us in usually once a month).  So, keeping fairly busy here in Madrid.

It’s rather a shame how FB has taken over.  It’s great for posting pictures but not easy to use for meaningful discussions.

It's alive, but like most things our age, just barely!
