Hi Al - happy holiday ! Who's Andy Napoleon - do you mean Marty Napoleon ? He was a terrific pianist. I worked with him several times in the city. A very nice guy as well. Rich Pearl.

The first time I saw, or heard of, Laurindo Almeida was at a Stan Kenton,
Carnegie Hall Concert.
It was in the 1950's.
The concert included Afro Cuban tunes, Machito, and something featuring
the above mentioned guitarist.
In my early years Stan Kenton and Pete Rugolo were my favorites
in the realm of big bands. I have somewhere Kenton on 78's, 10 inch Lp's
and many 12' Lp's, and 16" Langworth transcriptions.

For those Kenton aficionados, something it took me a while to figure out.
Artistry In Rhythm, Artistry Jumps, Artistry For Strings, ad nauseum:
Royalties aside, Stan was writing variations On A Theme!

Dixieland content: It was my great privilege and honor to play with
Charlie Shavers, Sol Yaged, Andy Napoleon and other
swinging New York musicians.

I still somewhere have the first recording I acquired by Laurindo Almeida --

there is absolutely no reference to jazz either in the sleevenotes or in the music.

I was reminded of it when a very senior Jewish historian, Bernard Wasserstein

of the sort from a sale, and looked it out... Recorded in Hamburg, the CD had som

jazz-free clarinet work of a high quality by . . . Herb Geller!
