[Dixielandjazz] grandparents in the swing era blues?

Agree, Stan. Hear James's boppish all-muted jamming on "Limehouse Blues" and soaring solo on "Tango Blues," both from around the mid-1950s. Most modern trumpeters I knew respected his mastery of the horn, at the very least. Same is true of Al Hirt, who could play in any style. Bill Huntington, who played bass with Hirt's quartet in his post "He's the King" years said he could be a furious bopper once he was free from being commercial. But sadly, Al kept playing from a wheelchair long after he had lost his chops.
