If you know someone who wants to understand early jazz at a detailed 
level, they should read (and listen to the embedded audio) Dave 
Kosmyna's Doctoral Dissertation, "What Ya Want Me To Do?".  It was a 
learning experience for me.  And the demonstration band is great on the 
recordings!
