Really sad to hear the Sacto Jubilee is no more - it has been a very large
part of my band's history and success.
The first one was 1974, four years after Natural Gas Jazz Band was formed.
This year, 2017, was the festival’s 44th year. NGJB has played in a total
of 39 of them, including a streak of 35 consecutive festivals, having
missed a total of only five.
Historically the event used to be a very large international event. Thanks
to the many contacts with numerous foreign bands at the festival, the
Gassers subsequently toured areas such as Kowloon, Tasmania, New Zealand,
Japan (3X), British Isles and many European and Scandinavian countries. In
1989, NGJB spent two weeks in the Soviet Union where they became the first
American jazz band to play in Siberia. This tour was initiated by the
Leningrad Dixieland Jazz Band at a previous Sacramento Jubilee.
The band wishes to thank that wonderful army of Jubilee volunteers that
Bill Borcher put together for the first Jubilee – you folks made it happen
we appreciate it, and we won’t forget it.
Phil Crumley,
Leader, Natural Gas Jazz Band
Is this a great list or what?
