[Dixielandjazz] Clifford Brown's artistry

Not only does he show virtuosity and melodic invention. It's just plain beautiful to hear.
Just a little background. In my teens I discovered what is generally referred to as OKOM. I love it, and it's mostly what I listen to. However, I had a roommate in college who had a collection of records by Charles Mingus, Sonny Rollins, Jaki Byard, et al. I fell in love with that music, too. I dug into it and figured out how Charlie Parker, Monk, etc. fit into the evolution of jazz. I even went to see guys like Ornate Coleman, Sun Ra, and Sonny Rollins live during that time frame. It expanded my musical horizons and has resulted in my being exposed to a whole lot of beauty I never would have known existed. I don't know what happened to that roommate, but I've been as grateful to him over the years as I am to the author whose biography of Bix I read in high school.

His virtuosity is at the service of melodic invention. If the soulful, creative interpretation doesn't move you, I wish you love and a heart transplant. Comparisons to Bunny Berigan are irrelevant, except to pay tribute to the genius of both men.
