May I suggest the recently discovered and globe-spanning story of multi-instrumentalist Frank "Big Boy" Goudie,1899- 1964.  

His tale paralells the history of jazz itself: birth in turn of century NOLA, migration to Europe and South America, transition to swing, recapitulation in the New Orleans revival:
