Bunny Berigan famously said it. "I practice drunk." 

From for example an account of the Benny Goodman tour of the USSR, it would be easily believed that Zoot Sims also said it. 
Some people involved in academic literary studies might well suppose Zoot was using Bunny's line. 

I should imagine he was simply telling the truth. 
Under the influence but not necessarily the influence of Bunny.

By which time Bunny had long been in his grave. 


Rather a nuisance not being able to hear them together earlier down here rather than later up there.
