There was an excellent British saxophonist of that surname. When I told
people is should be pronounced Fanshawe, the reaction was disbelief. So
here is a confirmation, coming from a comment on "A Word a Day."
..."Featherstonehaugh". The upper-class officer cadet would know that it
was pronounced as "Fanshawe" whilst those who were what Nancy Mitford would
describe as non-U <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U_and_non-U_English> would
generally try to pronounce it as written.
