The recent mention of intermission players @ Earthquake McGoons brought back the memory of Clancy Hayes.
Not to disparage Bob and Scott, but I think Clancy Hayes was the almighty star of the intermission riffs at Earthquake McGoons.
I can clearly recall Clancy slowly approaching his stool, adjusting himself, and then strumming and singing like a preacher who could never deliver a bad sermon.
Clancy was pure and direct.
I was so young at the time (early 20's) that I could not fully appreciate that Earthquake McGoon's was akin to the holy grail of trad jazz.
North Beach and the fringes offered so much enjoyment to a young soul with clubs like: The Roaring 20's, Playboy Club, Gold Street, Goman's Gay 90's, Burp Hollow, Jazz Workshop, The Purple Onion, Carol Doda's, The Red Garter, and others I have forgotten about.
Glad to have been there. Wish I had a time machine.
Sincerely,
Art
PS Another star of North Beach was Frank Gazis @ Vanessi's Restaurant. Anyone remember him?
