Hello John

I'm a member of U3A here in Sydney and last year I too gave a course on
jazz history. It was for 2 hours per week, for 6 weeks and I covered the
period 1909 to 1934.

My approach involved no geographic or ethnic assumptions and I even
chose the path of the fool and not quite rushed-in where angels fear to
tread. Yes, I asked the question "what is jazz?" I started by comparing
two recorded versions of High Society (Prince's Band from 1911 and King
Oliver from 1923). All the class agreed on what was jazz and what wasn't.

And, yes, we did hear "Come on and stomp, stomp, stomp" :-)

All the best,
Anton
