Stewart always played Stewart no matter the role.  I have just been reading 
Stewarts experiences as a bomber pilot inWW2.

There is a story that 2 airmen with a new posting reported to Stewart who 
was still wearing his Captains bars although he was a major. Stewart said. 
`Right yeah ..well. See that uhhh water tower  uhhh over ther.  Somebody, 
uhh yeah flew into it last week. (Long pause) Yeah..well..try not to do 
that.

You could just see Stewart delivering the lines.
