"Nothing but a music for dancers." And just whom do you think was paying his
bills? Playing what your customers want has ALWAYS been how musicians have
survived, if not prospered. This includes Rockers, jazzers, minstrels,
Mozart, all the Bachs, and Ugh ,the first guy to twang a bowstring while
Mrs. Ugh whacked on a hollow log with a stick. (He was a lousy shot and they
lived off the generosity of better hunters.)
You get to play what you personally want after the last set, when the
customers have gone and its just a bunch of friends and acquaintances in the
place.

Paul Whiteman band had pretty good musicians. His music was well done.
However, it remains nothing but a music for dancers.
