[Dixielandjazz] Tears

I agree about the New Black Eagles' version of 'Tears' being a swinging
version.

However, I have a couple of minor criticisms, of which probably only one can
be attributed to the band.

The first is that on my computer the tune was played in the key of E major,
whereas the Oliver version is played in the key of Eb major (on my English
10" Columbia LP). I assume the former is something to do with the recording
method, as I can only assume that the New Black Eagles played it in either
Eb or F.

The second is the strange vibrato some of the musicians use where the
vibrato is rather slow, and strong at the beginning of the note and fading
somewhat towards the end of the note, in contradistinction to the original
New Orleans musicians who played with a more rapid vibrato that usually
started from nothing and increased towards the end of the note. This may, of
course, be a conscious evolution, but unfortunately it doesn't sound right
to my ears.

Cheers

Bob Smith
