[Dixielandjazz] Showmanship and Dixieland

It was very common for the early jazzmen to play fairly fixed solos (eg - Oliver's & Dodds' "Dippermouth" solos).
You can hear similar solos in all the early Ellingtonia (even by different soloists); likewise on recordings by Sidney Bechet.
Few of them sound like "written & read" solos, though. The idea that all jazz solos are improvised on the spot is a popular fallacy, like the idea that some or most early jazz greats didn't read music. (Most clearly did read at least some music, even if only enough to devise an ensemble part or an semi-"improvised" solo based on the lead line and harmony.
Cheers

But, even when Louis played the same solo night after night, it was not like a Classical musician trying to play the same solo every time he played it.
If you listen closely, you’ll always hear subtle differences in his solos. Perhaps some nights he was trying to add a little, or improve on it a little. Other nights he might have felt different, thus playing the solo slightly different.
There is nothing wrong with essentially playing the same solo each time you play a song. After all, In Louis’ case, how can you improve on the best?
