It's 70 years from death here in the UK too. Has been for ages. I guess
that's why nobody was that surprised.

We distinguish between performance and composition. The copyright for
a performance only lasts up to 50 years from the performance. There
are some trying to get this changed at the moment. One of the prime
campaigners is Cliff Richards. His early records are coming out of
copyright. As he never wrote anything, he is loosing control over what
people can do with his recordings.
