Hi Dan,
I've never heard it said of Armstrong, but have heard that some of the old
time Parade hornmen in New Orleans did just that to keep the horn steady on
a hot sweaty day's parading. Still sounds very cruel to me!

Louis Armstrong used a saw on his mouthpiece to abrade the rim in four
places, so that (apparently) it would stay in place more firmly, even though
it made his lip bleed. Is there any truth to that?
