Subject: Re: Nat Hentoff-- WSJ- jazz books--five brief reviews
Nat is being too modest. Among the five best jazz books are Hear Me Talkin'
to You, which he and Nat Shapiro edited, and Charles Mingus' Me Myself and
I, which Nat himself co-wrote. My other nominations would be Jazzmen, Blues
People, and probably Louis Armstrong's Satchmo: My Life In New Orleans. I'm
also partial to Blues People, Free Jazz (by Jost), Stanley Dance's The World
of Duke Ellington, and George E. Lewis' Power Greater than Itself: The AACM
and American Experimental Music. The Bear Comes Home by Rafi Zabor is the
best novel about jazz. -- Howard Mandel
