Thank you for posting this Ken.
I have never heard Jim Rothermel, or at least - was not aware of it.
Actually, I somehow missed a whole generation of West Coast players.
OK, not all - we (my friends and I, not the royal we) came across
musicians who played with Turk Murphy, but hardly any others.
I, at least, having been CRC (now the GHB Foundation) and The
Mississippi Rag subscriber, bought records by traditional bands I did
not know, in order to learn more. So I found the Uptown Lowdown Jaa
Band, the Yankee Rhythm Kings (West Coast at leasst in style) and
quite a few others, and introduced them to my friends. But one can
only buyso many records, so the exposure was limited. Unfortunately,
not many West Coast bands played European jazz festivals - upon all my
visits to Breda and Bude I did not enccounter any. I read about some
of those musicians, but have been exposed to their music only after
joining DJML. Clint Baker (on clarinet with the Golden Gates on
Clarinet Marmalade which is playing right now), for example, I first
heard on You Tubes posted on the list.
So - thanks again. I am going to forward the link to my jazz friens -
this band is too good to miss!
Cheers
