Of course it depends upon who the sub is also.

I subbed for the late Kenny Davern, every once in a while, at  
Scanticon in Princeton NJ where he played in the Tony DiNicola quintet  
every Saturday Night when he wasn't traveling..

You could audibly hear a collective sigh of disappointment from the  
audience when I would show up in his place. There would probably be a  
cheer had he ever shown up in my place on a Barbone Street gig. <grin>
