Larry, I think what you say about us trumpet players has some validity in a certain sense. When I was going to college in the 1970s, the old-style trumpeting was looked upon as dated and not "cool." It took me a number of years to realize that the older guys including Harry James, Louis Armstrong, Roy Eldridge, and many others deserved TREMENDOUS respect. I also found that they were TECHNICALLY much more competent than I might've at first believed. And of course, I found that playing their music helped me get jobs and get paid! Why, what an AMAZING concept?
I've now learned to respect, revere, and properly import the styles of many into my own playing as it fits me. Hopefully, as we all grow in our musicianship, we learn. Mine were some bitter pills, but very much worth swallowing. And yes, their music's fun!!
