Subject: Festivals

I usually avoid outdoor festivals, as too many people are there to party

vs. to enjoy the music. Overlapping sound from other stages is also an issue,

though I've never attended the New Orleans fest, so I don't know how bad

this problem is. Suffice to say I don't want to hear the overly loud bass of

another stage's funk band in midst of a jazz set I'm trying to enjoy.

Give me a club, concert hall or auditorium for live jazz.

Norman writes—just so writers don’t jump all over Ken ( he can defend himself but I want to eliminate possible criticism.) This is a matter of personal preference for Ken and most of us on this list. A festival, large or small, is an economical way to sample various musics and various groups. There are many who have never experienced great jazz in an ideal setting. A festival is a way to introduce the music to a large number who might not otherwise attend music in a smaller venue under better setting for acoustics.

Sacramento, for example has music in great halls, outdoor stages, small intimate venues, so one can choose.

OK—with this additional information on record. Your responses to Ken’s post are welcome.

Thanks, Ken and all you listmates out there!
