Subject: Re: NOJ&H commentary-- Doug Ramsey
Yes, Doug Ramsey was a newsman on WDSU-TV in New Orleans during the first
Jazzfest years and a great member of the committee that selected the talent.
I reviewed the first festival in '68 for Down Beat. Emcee Willis Conover
called it "the only all-jazz jazz festival." Editor Dan Morgenstern came
down to review the '69 festival and I covered it for New Orleans magazine
and the weekly Vieux Carre Courier. The early history of the festival and
some sadly hilarious in-fighting involving Al Rose insulting Al Belletto and
modern jazz are described in "The Strange Case of the Jazz and Heritage
Festival," pp. 34-43 of my book Jazz in New Orleans: the Postwar Years
Through 1970.
