Many jazz musicians wore dark glasses during the 40s, 50s and 60s.  
Some because they smoked pot which as the hipsters know, gives you  
very red rimmed eyes and makes it easy for the narcs to spot a user.

Others copied the smokers because they wanted to look hip. <grin>
