[Dixielandjazz] Another Festival Bites the Dust

 Kit and all:

It is really quite Simple: The boards of Non-profits need to start running their Non- Profit corporations like a for profit one, to maintain a surplus of funds for operating capitol year after year, I remember not too many years ago that The Founder of Sac. Jazz festival left it with about a half a million dollar surplus.

Also the die hard Traditional fans need to understand that the costs for everything goes up every year, and therefore the price of tickets must also go up to keep up with the expenses. The Gasoline, Air fares, Hotel rooms and food costs, etc. and the costs to support all the support equipment, and such also goes up every year. Those costs must be passed on to the consumer at large to maintain a viable Festival operation. For Profit or Not. It is no sin nor crime to make a Profit, you are just supposed to put the surplus back into operating budget to continue the activities of the non-profit, and not bleed it of cash every year and have to rely solely upon sponsors contributions to put it on again next year. It's really a budgeting issue that is unfortunately ignored by many event promoters. This is no Field of Dreams, You cannot just put on a Festival and expect everybody to come. It is very hard work, and if you don't work hard starting for next year the day after this one is over you stand a pretty good chance of going broke. A difficult balancing act at best.

Bart.

Bob, in this case, I think your inferred facts may be a bit off.

Ocean Shores has had alternative styles for several years now and went
wholesale in that direction this year. Unfortunately, the numbers simply
weren't there to support that direction either.

My speculation, for what it's worth, is that they lost some of the core
traditional jazz fans when making the switch as the number of pure trad
bands was limited. This problem appeared to be compounded in that they
didn't have enough resources devoted to finding new audience members to
support the new types of bands presented. And unfortunately, some of these
newer ensembles were simply not prepared for this type of festival in terms
of stage presence, breadth of library and endurance.

I'm no smarter than the next guy in understanding how non-profit boards will
solve this problem, but simply broadening the musical styles presented isn't
a panacea to fixing the broader marketing challenge.

I am saddened to hear that Ocean Shores WA festival has thrown in the towel.

For those of you who decry the fact that Sacramento has brought in other
types of Americana music in order to survive, take note.

Isn't it better to have a festival with some Trad/Classic Jazz, then no
festival at all?
