[Dixielandjazz] Recording the music

Obviously people will use the equipment that they prefer, already own or can
afford. Nothing is indestructable - 78s break, LPs distort, tapes break and
shed the iron oxide coating, CDs scratch and hard drives fail.

I have borrowed a small recorder, about the size of a large TV remote
control, that records CD quality sound onto a SD card (as used in many
digital cameras) from our local FM radio station. With it I recorded a trio
of our top jazz musicians playing in a large warehouse and transferred the
music to CD. The musicians were delighted and surprised at the sound
quality.

Obviously a SD card can also be damaged, particularly the contacts, but with
no moving parts or fragile surfaces it has many advantages. Even a 1 gig
card will hold about an hour of music, and cards of up to 32 gig are now
available - about six cards in their plastic cases take up about the same
space as a CD jewel case. Maybe this is the way of the future.

I've forgotten the brand details of the recorder, but can easily check them
if any one is interested.

Best wishes

Jack Mitchell
