The title is only guessing, but maybe it has something to do with a kind of homesickness Bechet sometimes felt with staying all the time in Europe. It is known that one of his last wishes before he past away was to return to New Orleans.
In Europe at that time Bechet had a much better time businesswise playing a lot in France with Luter, and also recorded one of the most impressive instrumental blues records ever in the Netherlands : Dutch Swing College Blues in 1951.
I have the Sheik of Araby recording too on CD.It is in a way very forward looking, as in fact a lot of music producers do record only one musician now alone with a synth. At that time the musicians union however was still so powerfull that they were able to forbid this kind of tricks, fearing that it might be bad for business for musicians. Which in fact proved to be right if you see how many radio/TV/studio musicians lost their jobs the last few decades.
The producers also had to pay Bechet 6 times scale as sort of a penalty is what I heard. Which he undoubtly liked.
Kind regards,
Bert Brandsma
