[Dixielandjazz] Mutual admiration, maybe

I'd just like to add something to the discussion on cross-fertilisation among musicians of different genres.
The 'something' is Louis' version of the "Whiffenpoof Song" sub-titled the "Boppenpoof Song":
"From the tables up at Birdland to the place where Dizzie dwells
In their beards and their funny hats they love so well,
All the boppers are assembled, and when they're really high
They constitute a weird personnel.
All the riffs these cats are playing are crazy, cool, and gone, like this:
Ooly ooh, scooby doo, ooby dooby dooby ooh bobbly dat
Things like that.
So let them beat their brains out till their flatted fifths are gone,
And they'll pass and be forgotten like the rest.
Yes, they're poor little cats who have lost their way
(scat vocal)
They're little lost sheep who have gone astray
(scat vocal)
Yes, dixieland music they condemn, but every wrong note they play is a gem,
So, Lord have mercy on every one of them, for they
(scat vocal)
Ye.e.e.es, ba baa!"
I've no idea how seriously this was meant, but Decca recalled the original issue on 78's presumably fearing slander allegations.
I remember that Dizzie Gillespie did a take-off of Louis on Louis' "seventyth
birthday party".

Cheers
