Hi folks,
Shameless Plug - Monday 26th July @ Helmsley Arts Centre, Helmsley,
North Yorks.
The outstanding British poet, Philip Larkin, who died 25 years ago, was
deeply influenced by the hot jazz he heard in the ‘30s and ‘40s.
He started writing a regular jazz review in the Telegraph in 1961 which
lasted through to 1971. These columns were published in a book, ‘All
What Jazz’, the introduction to which has become one of the most
celebrated pieces of prose pieces of the twentieth century.
The Rydale Arts Festival has commissioned a special one off performance
of “Honey & Broken Glass, Poetry and prose of Philip Larkin (1922-1985)
read by Martin Vander Weyer and David Pike, of the 1812 Theatre Company,
combined with the jazz Larkin loved, played by the John Petters Quartet
with Martin Litton, piano, Trevor Whiting, reeds, Keith Donald, bass.
Larkin had rather extreme views about jazz. He favoured the view put
forward by Eddie Condon, “As it enters the ear, does it come in like
broken glass or honey?
He was a traditionalist who liked early jazz and swing and deplored
Be-Bop and the ugliness of Coltrane.
How's this? "Perhaps I was mistaken in thinking that jazz had died; what
it had done was split into two, intelligence without beat and beat
without intelligence"...."Beat was jazz gone to seed, just as 'modern
jazz' was..."
This unique show promises to be a night to remember for fans of real
jazz and the works of one of our most famous poets.
There are only a few tickets left so please book now on: 01751 475777.
The show starts at 8PM at Helmsley Arts Centre, Helmsley, north Yorks.
