I'm not sure what you mean. On my websites I just link to the mp3 file and when you click on the link, it opens the song in the browser's player, which for me is quicktime.

Me:(AL)
End user can use one or more of many programs as a plugin.
Quicktime, Real Player, Windows Media, Flash etc
Some site you can click to play, no obvious time delay
media starts playing whether video or audio.
Other sites you see a "download bar".
In most cases the file is saved on YOUR hard drive in a temporary file.
Streaming I suppose is more like a radio signal. You hear the music
but it is not stored on your hard drive. (That's a guess.)
My "problem" was to control MY WEB SITE and I came up with a
band aid for now. (that's a joke son). I have to learn more programming
before I can give a complete answer.

What happens when you go to:
http://www.stlouisstompers.com/Recordings.html
and click on one of the underlined songs?
What happens depends, but ultimately I think for all browsers
you have to wait for the whole mp3 file to download before
a player opens and plays the music.
I'm guessing this is what Al is trying to avoid.
Some sites use what is called streaming. This will start
playing the audio when enough has been "buffered" and carry on
downloading in the background.
I've never set this up, so don't have first hand experience,
but this web site seems to give a pretty good tutorial of
one way of doing it
=========== Me again. I will definitely look there.
For now if you go to http://alevy.com
you will hear an MP3 of a midi file I sequenced. I
think it's "Put On A Happy Face" from Bye Bye Birdie.
(I forget since I keep switching songs) No clicking no downloading.
It's embedded. If you click on http://alevy.com/alevybb.htm
you can click on a song title with MP3 noted and it will be downloaded.
Last night I stayed up till the wee hours creating a really Mickey Mouse
work around. Click on http://alevy.com/goodman.htm and click on a
song title with MP3 noted and no downloading. At least it's a start.
My aim is to prevent downloading but allow listening.
I know there are better ways!
P.S. to Beth. I know you meant well but "ram" does not refer to
real media. It's a JAVA or HTML instruction.
Real media extension is .rm I stopped using Real Player because
too many people (including me) complained about the constant
notifications interrupting or crashing their programs.
I deleted it from my hard drive although there are still some remnants on the web site.
Cheers,
Al
