We're getting a little off topic, but I can't resist adding two or three
cents.

A well known trumpet player here in Southern California had a special
mouthpiece for valve trombone made up by Bob Reeves. Trumpet rim and cup,
trombone shank. The mouthpiece is very long, & looks like it is about nine
inches long. Intonation is not an issue. It does have a thin sound no doubt due
to fewer overtones (undertones?). It works okay for playing lead trombone.
Doesn't blend well otherwise.

Another well known trumpet player tells about when he was playing
mellophonium with Stan Kenton. The mellophonium players all bought cornet
mouthpieces in order to drive Stan crazy. They took their parts up an octave or two.
That lasted exactly one concert because Kenton collected all the cornet
mouthpieces right away. Kids will be kids.

A well known trombone player out here took his pocket trumpet & shortened
the leader pipe a few inches. He stuffed a trombone mouthpiece in the horn.
It sounds bad all the time. The horn now looks like it has a bell on both
ends.

Kash...you probably know all these guys. I'll tell you off list if you
really wanna know who they are.

There have been various comments about trumpet mouthpieces being used in
trombones, french horn mouthpieces in a tuba!! I'm wondering about the gap
between the stock and the hole in the instrument? Or, is the old "wrap
paper around the stock of the mouthpiece until it's the right size? Still,
seems to me there would be an intonation problem.
