How true! "Jazz schools" only teach modern, starting much after Parker.

Also - how true!
Here in Israel we have at least two groups that often play for young
audiences: Swing de Gitanes and New Orleans Function.
The latter, especially, has enthusiastic young followers, and often
plays for dancers. And often, after the band is done, DJs continue
playing our kind of music, and kids go on dancing till the wee hours.

Swing de Gitanes may play less for dancing, but it does. I once
attended their "Swing de Belleville" party at a night club (named
after the French cartoon "Triplets de Belleville", which was shown on
the screen through most of the evening, albeit without sound). Young
people were dancing like crazy, both with the band and with the
intermission records (Goodman, Tommy Dorsey, Glenn Miller, Lunceford,
Armstrong). And again, they continued dancing long after the band
ended its performance. I have hardly heard them without many young
people in the audience, and even at a concert couples danced in the
isles.
So - there is hope, but bands must go where young people are
(something Steve has been preaching at least since my joining the
list, probably much longer; and, unlike the said Israeli bands, his
band is not young).
Cheers
