[Dixielandjazz] Advice about Mics

Hi Rae Ann,
There are several problems recording live bands with cam corders.
The first is the Automatic level control which snatches on peaks. I
checked your YouTube video of 'Gatemouth', which sounds like it has that
effect on loud peaks. If your camera has a manual level control that
would over come that can of worms.
The way I get round the sound problem is to use m professional 8 track
hard disc machine to record the audio to professional CD standards. I
then use Sony Vegas Pro 8 software, which is a high end multi camera
editing programme to edit video from two hi def Panasonic cameras and
sync the sound. This works very well. Have a look at By & By

recorded with two mics at St Luke's Church, Cranham last month. The
balance is not perfect - the trombone is a little prominent, but the
sound is much better than what I would get with the camera audio.
You may be able to get a portable DAT recorder - or minidisc - or CDR
and record your sound on to that.

Hope that helps
Keep swinging
John
