Well, my cassette test revealed that chrome tape is still as good as it 
ever was, revealing the same crackling.  So, it looks like I'll simply 
have to live with the replacement disc, which is admittedly not as bad 
as the first one.

And, at times, I wish I didn't have such sensitive hearing.  But it does 
come in handy when remastering.  (What I wouldn't give for a cassette of 
the master tape!)
