Thanks for the IsoBuster hint.  I downloaded it and it worked like a 
charm.  But it also helped me learn more about that damned CD.

First, the anticopy crap is clearly embedded in the first track, as 
that's the ONLY track that wouldn't copy.  (Don: The reason you got 
Roxio to work is probably because it's older software and couldn't 
accurately detect the 2009 anticopy code Stomp Off now uses. 
Unfortunately, I'm told that Roxio won't work on my version of XP.)

Second, the crackling is definitely a manufacturing flaw as it 
transferred over with the music just as I'd surmised.

So, after I test my last-remaining CD player, I'm gonna sit right down 
and do something I haven't done in years: make a chrome cassette!
