Dave,

You have to be more specific in your sweeping generalities!

Mariachi is very localized to certain areas of Mexico (and California)  
- I would not ask a Cuban, Nicaraguan, or Argentine band to attempt  
the style, nor would I even expect a Banda from Sinaloa, Mexico to try  
it. All are Latinos, but their cultures (musical and otherwise) are  
very different.

(to go back near somebody else's analogy - don't ask a Kabuki Theatre  
to do very much Shakespeare - they might try, but it probably won't  
work too well!)
