Leslie has been suffering and fighting her cancer for several years now- she has been upbeat and positive and has gone through so much- I can't recount the number of surgeries and still, she has been actively putting out the Mississippi Rag every month and having nothing to do with complaints. In my mind she is larger than life.... I have been long distance friends for more than 20 years and have the greatest respect and love for her.
I know that in the jazz world, our jazz family, she is regarded with great love and respect. Her grace, her spirit, her love of the people and all of the groodness that is in the package that we know.... I also am secure in the knowledge that we all pray for her and send her baskets of love and good wishes. My fondest hope is that if her tasks here with us are finished ,that she be freed of her pain and suffering and that she is reunited with the hundreds and hundreds of valued friends that have gathered to welcome her.
Leslie has been a mentor to me, a guiding hand and counsel. I am already feeling as though a ragged hole has been ripped into my life, just knowing that she is losing her battle... and although this isn't about me- it feels so sad in my heart.
Love to Jodie, keep up the good work. You are loved and valued as well. We all must remember the gladness that she carried and the grace in which she lived her life, the joy she found in the sunshine of her days.
I love you, Leslie ... god Speed.
Laurie

  Guys:
I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news but reports from Minneapolis is that
  Leslie
Johnson (of Mississippi Rag Fame) is very sick with cancer and in a hospice.
  The
prognosis is not good. I'm afraid I don't have any more details than that.
  Her assistant
Jodie is looking after her. There might be more info at their web site but
  don't
  know for sure.
