[Dixielandjazz] Al Winters - RIP

Hello Listmates:

Received the below message from Steve Hester who asked that I post it  
for him. Here is Al Winters bio from All About Jazz. I believe I  
worked with him in the late 1950s at the Melody Lounge in NYC for 6  
months or so. We both graduated from Hofstra University. 5 of us in  
that band were either Hofstra grads or students. I think, at the time,  
his nickname was "Jimmy". Wonderful player/man with a great sense of  
humor.

Alfred C. Winters - Born: March 24, 1931
Born and raise in New York. Completed B.S. and M.S degrees from  
Hofstra University. Worked professionly since 1957. Studied with  
Metropolitan Opera Orchestra principal trombonist Roger Smith.  
Background includes playing with Bobby Hackett, Gene Krupa, Phil  
Napolean, Wild Bill Davison, Benny Goodman. Recorded with numerous  
artists including Gene Krupa and Bobby Hackett. Relocated in 1966 to  
the Detroit area and performed and recorded with the Austin-Moro Big  
Band and the New Mckinney's Cottonpickers as well as local artists  
like Tom Saunders. Led my own band since 1988 and have performed at  
numerous Jazz Festivals including Newport Jazz Festival, Montreaux  
Jazz Festival and the sacramento Jazz Jubilee.

AL WINTERS R.I.P.

Trombonist with New McKinney's Cotton Pickers, Tommy Saunders, Al  
Winters' Swing Street... also worked house band at Elmwood, with BG at  
Seattle World's Fair, Bobby Hackett, Gene Krupa, etc.

Passed away after brief illness.

No public funeral.   A memorial may be scheduled in May.  Further info
