Dear Mike,
The First show went to air over The Blue Network on 20th May 1944 and
the last (No. 46) on 7th April 1945.
For the record, Dick Cary's first appearance was on Show 23 (21st Oct
1944) and the last on Show 42 (10th March 1945). He missed eight
shows. His only acknowledged arrangement was for "Every Night" on Show
31 and he only appears to have played trumpet and never piano on the
series. If he played 'peck-horn' on any of the broadcasts in the
series it was not announced by Eddie Condon or documented.
The late Bozy White's 1980 discography 'The Eddie Condon "Town Hall
Boadcasts" 1944-45' thanks Dick Cary for his assistance in the
identification of the various concert personnel, so if Dick Cary was
on stage for earlier shows it would, presumably, have been included.
As you know, only Shows 1 to 20 were held at the NYC Town Hall. It
then moved to the Ritz Theatre, 48th Street (just off Broadway) for
the rest.
I was very fortunate to have met and spent some time with the charming
and talented Dick Cary on both his visits to Australia -
in March 1964 with the Eddie Condon All Stars and again when he was
the official guest at the 31st Australian Jazz Convention (26-31 Dec
1976). I was present for both recording sessions on 27-28 Dec at that
time.
Very kind regards,
Bill.
