This Mosaic re-issue will surely bring back memories to those who saw
Jonah Jones live in NYC in the mid 1950s at the Embers. Besides that
wonderful muted soft jazz, in a hip nightclub, he played a little
Dixieland now and then with other groups. To those who have not heard
Jones play this way, give a listen to some melodic improvisation by a
master musician.
Cheers,
Steve Barbone

Jonah Jones
As “Johnny Paycheck at Carnegie Hall” was not recorded at Carnegie
Hall, “Jonah Jones at the Embers,” just reissued by Mosaic, was not
recorded at the Embers, a New York jazz club. It was made in the
studio, but during the 10-year period when Mr. Jones played at the
Embers for up to 20 weeks a year. This was the great second wind of
his career; in 1956, when he made this album, he was in his mid-40s, a
swing trumpeter who hadn’t been known as a bandleader before. Here his
improvisations are pinpointedly focused on melody and swing, and he
always has a mute in his trumpet; this is quiet jazz with organized
locomotive force. No wonder people wanted more of him.
