The following is a comprehensive list of education programs sponsored by the
Sacramento Traditional Jazz Society.

 *********************************************************************************************************SACRAMENTO TRADITIONAL JAZZ SOCIETY (STJS)2787 Del Monte Street,West Sacramento, CA  95691(916) 372-5277JAZZ EDUCATION RESOURCESDRUM SET DONATIONS:  As STJS rotates out used drumsets each year, they are donated to benefit Sacramento State University,Sacramento City Schools, San Juan Unified School District, WashingtonUnified, Woodland Unified, and Dry Creek Joint Elem. School Districts.MUSIC LESSON SCHOLARSHIPS (est. 1979) - STJS provides funding for privatemusic instruction for local elementary, middle school and high schoolstudents. Naturally, the emphasis is on jazz. Scholarship money is raised atthe monthly raffle held at the "Jazz Sunday" concert, and by the STJSFoundation. If you are a young musician interested in studying traditionalJazz, you can download information and an application to apply for one ofthese music lesson awards. JAZZ CAMP - Youth and Adult (est. 1986) This week-long summer campprovides intensive jazz combo instruction for approximately 100 youngmusicians ages 12-18. Scholarships are available to the youth campunselected instruments.  Expanded in 2000 to provide an additional week-longcamp for approximately 90 adults. Held at Sly Park, the Sacramento Countyschools Outdoor Education Facility in Pollock Pines. Camp faculty consistsof some of the finest trad jazz musicians in the country including:Rusty Stiers:     trumpet/cornet  Anita Thomas:clarinet & saxGreg Varlotta:  trombone  Bob Phillips:pianoEd Metz, Jr.: drums  Lee Westenhofer:        tuba and bassShelley Burns: vocals  Dannie Balser:vocals & trumpetEddie Erickson:           guitar & banjo. Camp applicants may contact camp director Bill Dendle or theirlocal jazz club for a scholarship application.  The STJS raffle also funds ascholarship for college students to attend the Trad Jazz Camp forAdults.These recipients are selected at the Trad Jazz Youth Band Festivalfrom participating bands.TRAD JAZZ YOUTH BAND FESTIVAL (est. 2006) - STJS created the first Trad JazzFestival for student jazz combos, and it was a huge success in its firstyear.  This non-competitive scholastic festival is co-presented with SacState Jazz Studies under the direction of Steve Roach.  Over $4,000 in meritawards and scholarships are awarded.  The $100 combo registration feeincludes sectionals, ensemble clinics, All-Star faculty concert, adjudicatedperformances, optional Friday evening jam session with clinicians andnext-day STJS Jazz Sunday Concert. Festival tickets include the 7 PMall-star faculty concert.  $10 in advance, $12 at the door. Students 21 andunder are admitted at no charge to the daytime portion of thefestival.February 9, 2009. Students attend weekly rehearsals under thedirection of Dave Johnson. TNT represents the Sacramento Traditional JazzSociety at several events throughout the year: the Sac. Jazz Jubilee, theTrad Jazz Youth Band Festival, community events, and Jazz Sundays, to name afew.   For info contact band manager:  barbvagg at comcast.netSAC. JAZZ JUBILEE (est. 1974) - The Jubilee is the world's largest andgreatest traditional jazz festival, attracting close to 100,000 people tohear a showcase of specially invited musicians performing throughout thememorial Day Weekend in Sacramento.  There is no charge for admission toyouth band performance sites in Old Sacramento and the DowntownPlaza,including the Children's Stage on the grass across from the Old EagleTheatre in Old Sacramento. This series offree Sunday evening jazz concerts in Sacramento-area parks during summertimefeatures the best traditional jazz bands around. Held in the Tsakopoulos Galleria ofSacramento's Main Library at 8th and "I" St., these free concerts inApril/May feature a variety of bands, culminating in an Internationalconcert showcasing one of the foreign bands scheduled to appear at theJubilee. This year, "the idea is to present bands that are fun."  TheJazzin' Jacks from Sweden will be the featured international band.
