I always loved the way smoking one joint sent him over the edge. Lol
Actually, I had a huge crush on Sal when I was a teenager and of course love Krupa.
Did anyone notice that the women's voice introducing the film pronounced his
name "crupa" like cup?
But if nothing else, the music in all these films makes it worth while
watching again. Seems we have this discussion every year when they air these old
movies.
At the Costa Mesa Fest. this weekend. If you see a women buzzing by in a
wheelchair with a dog on my lap, come up and say hello.

As I recall, and it has been years since I've seen the Gene Krupa Story,
there is a scene in which Krupa/Mineo is at a party and a character says
something like, "You know Bix Beiderbecke" who is one of the guests.
Chronologically Bix was long dead by this time, but hey! It's Hollywood.
The movie came out about the time my recently deceased brother was in
college, St. Joseph's College in Rennselaer, IN, which is the college Krupa was
kicked out of. I remember him telling us that there were howls when the
Hollywood version of the campus was shown.
The drumming was actually done by Krupa. Dave Tough had been deceased over
ten years by the time this movie was made. Tough was played in the movie by
Shelly Manne. Maybe that's what you're thinking of.

I recorded all three, Glenn Miller Story, Benny Goodman Story and Gene
Krupa Story along with High Society with Bing, Frank, and Louis. Loved
HS even if it was the 4th time through for me. Benny Goodman Story was
better than I remembered it being. Chose it over GM Story as it had a
happier ending. At one point this elderly black gentleman shows up and
introduces himself as Fletcher Henderson. I thought wow was he still
around in '55? Turns out the part was played by Sammy Davis SENIOR.
Couldn't really get into the Gene Krupa Story. Maybe I was put off by
the Black & White format. I still have it on my DVR, maybe I'll try
again. I think it was all the Krupa style drumming (by Dave Tough?)
which was a bit much.
