This is a DIXIELAND band that not only draws large audiences but gets
them to pay top dollar. $40 per person admission for the below
concert. Gee, where did the rest of us go wrong? <grin>

Hall of Fame band to play at Backus
Border Concert Association presents the Barbary Coast Dixieland Band
“Not just anther band, but a complete stage show” describes each
performance by the Barbary Coast Dixieland Band, according to Allied
Concert Services.

The band will appear at Backus Auditorium on Thursday, April 24 at
7:30 p.m. under the auspices of the Border Concert Series.“Not only is
the music performed by this sextet sensational, but as the area’s
finest entertainers, they punctuate each performance with whim, wit
and zany comedy, good vocals, and a variety of special novelty numbers
which add seasoning to each well-blended concert,” says Allied.

Since 1967, the Barbary Coast Dixieland Band has set thousands of toes
tapping at major right clubs, the Minnesota State Fair, The Ordway
Theater as well as over the airways of WCCO Radio, not to mention over
50 performances at concert associations throughout the middle of the
United States.

Scores of group meetings, conventions and trade show have enjoyed the
exciting performances of the Barbary Coast Dixieland Band. National
and international tours have taken their jazz message far and wide
from a Mississippi paddle wheel river boat, to tours in Florida and
Arizona, to performances in Nagasaki, Japan.

Members of the band include leader Dick Peterson on banjo and guitar;
Dick Ramberg on clarinet and piano; Jim ten Bensel on trombone; Tom
Andrews on drums; Steve Pikal on bass and trombone; and Russ Peterson
on all the other instruments. Recently elected to the Minnesota Hall
of Fame, the Barbary Coast Dixieland Band’s performances are “truly
and enjoyable experience,” said Paul Folin of Allied.

Only a few bands survive the many and various threats and obstacles to
become an established regional institution, but the Barbary Coast
Dixieland Band has survived not only as a first-rate band but has
matured into a production company representing several of the most
talented traditional jazz musicians in the upper Midwest, reports Folin.

A word about their name. In spite of all its adventurous implications,
the band has no geographical connection to San Francisco’s Barbary
Coast, the former haven of pirates and other colorful characters who
frequented that notorious entertainment area. Instead, the band traces
it origin to an island near the south shore of the Mississippi River,
where it flows from west to east past downtown St. Paul.
For those who have not already purchased a season membership, the cost
of a ticket at the door of this final concert of the season is $40 for
adults, $20 for students and $85 for a family.

Supper will be offered once again, preceding the concert in the Backus
Community Center Reception Room. The cost is $5 per meal and it will
be available from 4:30 to 7 p.m.
