>From liner notes on a CD of these guys: "The original Mound City Blue
Blowers was formed by Red McKenzie, Dick Slevin and Jack Bland in 1923. At the
time Red McKenzie was a bellhop, at the Claridge Hotel, in St. Louis......Red
McKenzie played what he called a "hot comb", which was really just an ordinary
comb with a strip of paper held against it. Most writers state that McKenzie
used tissue paper, but Eddie Condon insisted that he only used strips of
newspaper from the New York World." I believe he has a little pocket comb for,
"I Ain't Got Nobody".

The date on this film clip in 1929. Note who is playing guitar. (In 1924
the Mound City Blue Blowers record of "Arkansas Blues" and "Blue Blues" sold
over a million copies.)

The Mound City Blue Blowers with Red McKenzie (kazoo and vocal), Jack Bland
(banjo), Carl Kress (guitar) and a very entertaing Josh Billings (suitcase)
play "I Ain't Got Nobody" and "My Gal Sal".

In this video of the Blueblowers, does anyone have any ideas on how the
melody is being played? Sounds like like kazoo, but I can't see one.
All I can see is a metal cup. Did he have a hole in it through which
he blew, or what? Also what do you think the wrapping is, on which the
the drummer is beating ?
