I think a Sousaphone is a Sousaphone because J.P. Sousa invented the
point-to-the -front bell on the bass horn.

Nope, Sousa's concept of the instrument later called the Sousaphone (JW Pepper
didn't even call it that at first, but Pepper designed and built the first one)
was to have the sound going up to avoid directionality of the bass.  Problem is,
outside....so, Conn eventually turned the bell forward, apparently over the 
objections of Sousa but to the point of a much easier playing instrument.  Not GOOD,
but easier.
