[Dixielandjazz] Big Bands & Charts -- Goodman

Hal,

In 1996 I was at a convention in Las Vegas and Pete Barbuti did a number of his routines including the 4th. trumpet part thing, playing the piano with his cigar and a chorus using a broom. This was all very funny and his stage presence live is superb.
Part two was his trio backing up Carl Fontana.........great, great, great. I had the fortune to have a chat with Carl before the gig and he was very laid back and friendly or should I say approachable. A very fun night for all of us lucky enough to have been there.

I remember Barbutti doing that bit on the Merv Griffin Show most likely in
the mid-to-late '60s when Griffin's show was on Westinghouse and shown
weekday afternoons in Chicago. I thought I was the only one who remembered
it. Very funny routine! The bit also has the song done with a Marie-like
"ensemble" vocal from the band, behind solo singer who apparently didn't
  make the gig.

Does anyone remember Pete Barbutti's routine from the '60s or '70s in
which the the scenario is that the band boy for a big band leaves the
charts at the last gig -- no one has music except for the 4th trumpet
player who had his music in his case. He then proceeds to play the 4th
tpt part (which is mostly one note reiterated in the rhythm of the piece)
to "It's Only a Shanty in Old Shanty Town" while trying to be hip and
  happening.
