I understand what you're getting at here, Larry, but closing the district
wasn't the thing that "forced jazz out of town."

Prior to the closing of the district New Orleans jazz was getting exposure
outside of the city. The many vaudeville tours of the Creole Band circa
1914-1918, brought the music all over the US. Tom Brown's band and the
ODJB in Chicago 1915-1916.

The basic reason jazz musicians starting leaving New Orleans was money.
There were better paying gigs elsewhere.

The other myth is that practically all the jazz musicians left. Not so.
There were more musicians that stayed than left. Many musicians wouldn't
leave because they heard about how cold it was up north, and about
musicians going up there and getting stranded with no gig.

Sincerely,
Chris Tyle
