this sort of technology was used on Johnny Guarnieri's ECHOES OF ELLINGTON album, Guarnieri recording direct on to recording electronics within a piano and the recording being played through another piano in a venue with choice acoustics. 
A young German pianist I played the recording to said he had never heard such refinement of touch and sense of dynamics,  which you can actually say about some 1940s recordings of Guarnieri on normal piano in a studio of the time. 

Of course some pianists are blurry in their fingering, and there are still lots of questions. As there should be.
